Gibraltar and Evacuation
Gibraltar
Gibraltar and Evacuation
When the war broke out in September 1939 it was thought by military experts and politicians that Gibraltar, like in the case during the First World War, was not going to be in the font line of hostilities. However, by May 1940 when Italy entered the war on the German side, it became clear that the war scenario was going to be very different to that of the First World War and that Gibraltar would have to play a major role. Given this, the British Government ordered the evacuation of women, children, the elderly and infirm to French Morocco. The main reason for this was that Gibraltar had to be converted in a fully-fledged fortress, which Hitler was planning to capture with Spanish assistance and if he had succeeded it would have changed completely the outcome of the Second World War.

1940 US CENSUS is here
As you may have heard, the official USA census for 1940 was released this week, after 72 years of privacy protection. The census covered all 132 million people who lived in the USA in April 1940, and it is the largest and most comprehensive set of American historical records ever released. For each person the census includes the name, age, address, birthplace, members of the household, and a wealth of additional information on some people such as income, house value, number of former marriages and residence in 1935. If your family has any people who lived in 1940 in the USA, you will be able to find them here and learn more about them, and perhaps discover family members you did not previously know about.

WELCOME!
Welcome to BACK to MALTA blog!
There are more Maltese outside the Maltese Islands than there are citizens residing in the country itself. The Maltese outside Malta are either emigrants or descendents of emigrants. The countries which have most traditionally hosted the Maltese diaspora are Australia, Canada, the U.S.A., and Britain. Nevertheless, there are Maltese living in virtually every country around the world and this blog will travel the world in hopes of bringing the Maltese back to Malta.
